How the counts work
- Words: each run of non-whitespace characters counts as one word. Punctuation stays attached to the word.
- Characters: the first total includes spaces and line breaks; the second removes whitespace. Both use JavaScript string length, so a supplementary Unicode symbol such as many emoji counts as two UTF-16 code units, not one displayed grapheme.
- Sentences: a run of
.,?, or!counts when followed by whitespace or the end of the text. This simple rule is predictable, but it does not parse abbreviations or natural language perfectly. - Paragraphs: non-empty text blocks count as paragraphs; one or more blank lines separate blocks. Blank lines at the beginning or end do not add paragraphs.
- Lines: each newline starts another line. Empty input has zero lines, while a trailing newline adds an empty final line.
